Denuncia presentata da Umberto Sartori
All'Arma dei Carabinieri, Comando Provinciale della Compagnia Venezia.
Venezia, 27 marzo 2000
Io sottoscritto Umberto Sartori, nato il 7 luglio 1953 a Venezia, ivi residente in Dorsoduro 604, tel 0415288711, mobile 03391634028, posta elettronica venetian@tin.it,

segnalo e denuncio quanto segue:

Charges
To: Arma dei Carabinieri, Commando Provinciale della Compagnia Venezia
Venice, March 27, 2000
From: Umberto Sartori, born July 7, 1953 in Venice Resident at Dorsodoro 604, tel 0415288711, mobile 03391634028, e-mail venetian@tin.it

Charges follow:

During the maintenance work on the Fondamenta dei Tolentini, most recently about a year ago, numerous columns and railings of Istrian stone, in good condition, were taken away and replaced with new products. Furthermore, left in place were badly patched, seriously nicked columns or even ones broken in one or more pieces.
Such interventions, along with others on various decorations of the city of Venice (bridges, fountains, pavement stones, etc.) were and are the object of strong protests on the part of the population and of Associations, culminating in these days with illustrated researched documentation prepared in a room in San Leonardo in Canneregio from March 24th to 31st, 2000.
I was passing by the Fondamenta dei Tolentini the afternoon of March 25 and noticed that the patched columns (more than ten) were again broken, together with some whole ones, there was serious damage to the entire side protection which resulted in it being held to the ground for a large part of its considerable length. I further observed that tied up in the canal was an iron boat, license 6V30290, equipped with a mechanical arm working at remaking the waterfront on the opposing side (from which, casually, all the columns and stones were taken away.)
Other charges:
That a large part of the objects in cast iron and iron which have been removed from their places to undergo restoration were not put back, but replaced with indecent copies from a technological view, as well as defacing the Traditions and esthetics of this city.
I cite examples which can be verified by sight, the Bridge of the Donna Onesta (located by the University Ca'Foscari), the fountain in the Piscina Venier (Accademia area) and the fountain in Calle Larga San Girolamo (Case Nuove). These last two now contain parts in brass that were concealed with a black varnish, as it was more easily melted than the original iron.

I ask therefore:
That precautions are taken to restrain and watch all the works on recently restored public property to prevent that, with sharpened attention to this problem, on the part of the public opinion, local and international, effective actions can be taken to conceal, and/or tampering with the proof, just like what it seems they were able to do with the damages to the waterfront of the Tolentini which now must be redone as it is unsafe.
That the reasons of taking away fixed works, on the technical and on the destination of the originals, with particular regard to the enormous number of stones from the pavement replaced with substitutes, will be investigated.

I briefly add an excerpt from the photographic documentation placed in the prepared show in San Leonardo and the photo of the actual state of the columns of Tolentini. I point out the site http://www.artit.net/venezia for other documented details and I remain available for the inspection of the case and to share all other information and documentation which I have in my possession.
