L'avidità e l'arroganza dei saccheggiatori si è spinta fino a voler risparmiare all'osso sui costi delle copie. Non paga di aver affidato il lavoro a persone incapaci come nel caso dei ponti, ha anche pensato di fondere le parti più difficili da realizzare sotto forma di pezzi separati, in un metallo diverso (ottone o bronzo) dal corpo della fontana. Questo metallo dolce è assai più facilmente fusibile del ferro o della ghisa: non richiede altoforni e il fatto di separarlo dal corpo principale della fusione consente di realizzare uno stampo molto più semplice. Per fondere un cappello di fontana in un sol pezzo con il pinnacolo senza petali, infatti, lo stampo dovrebbe essere realizzato almeno in due tasselli, per permettere la riproduzione del sottosquadra fra il pinnacolo e la base; con i petali i tasselli necessari diventano quattro. Un'operazione di questo tipo richiede fonditori esperti. La copia senza pinnacolo, invece, necessita di una semplice impressione del coperchio in una cassetta di sabbia o terra di Francia (nel nostro caso sabbia, vista la grana della superficie e la pessima resa dei dettagli), realizzabile da qualunque apprendista.	The greed and arrogance of the pillagers went as far as to try to save as much money as possible on the cost of the copies. It did not pay to trust incapable people as in the case of the bridges. In this case they thought of melting the more difficult parts to make as separate pieces, in a different metal (brass or bronze) than the body of the fountain. This soft metal is much easier to fuse than iron and cast iron: it does not need blast furnaces and the fact of separating from the main body allows the making of a very simple mold. The casting of a fountain cover in only one piece with a pinnacle without petals, in fact, the mold needs to be made in at least two inserts, to permit the reproduction from the undercut between the pinnacle and the base; with the petal inserts necessary they become four. An operation of this type needs expert founders. A copy without a pinnacle, however, requires only a simple impression of the cover in a box of sand or earth of France (in our case sand, seeing the grain of the surface and the poor definition of detail), and could be made by a simple apprentice.

Quale pensate sia l'originale ? Which one do you think is the original ?

Sotto la fragile vernice nerastra della vergogna spunta l'evidenza dell'imbroglio. Il pinnacolo è in metallo tenero, fuso a parte e avvitato. Va detto che i pinnacoli originali non avevano questa forma a fuso, ma una più complessa con quattro petali alla base. Pare che in tutta la città non ne sia sopravvissuto alcuno.
Under the dark varnish of shame the evidence of the trick springs. The pinnacle is made of soft metal, casted apart and screwed on. The original pinnacles were not of this spindle shape, but of a more complex one, with four petals on the base. No one of the originals seems to be survived in town.
