Leopardo: le macchie o gli artigli?	Leopard: the spots or the clutches?
Oltre alla sostituzione dei masegni in intere aree urbane, anche gli scavi effettuati per manutenzione agli impianti interrati vengono richiusi impiegando i nuovi piastrelloni anziché gli originali, che svaniscono nel nulla. Alcuni investono poche pietre e sono ormai migliaia, altri invece sono considerabili come rifacimenti di un'intera strada. Per identificare con facilità le pietre sostituite, basta camminare per la città una mezzoretta dopo un acquazzone primaverile. Si vedranno le trachiti originali brillare dei loro colori ormai quasi asciutte; tra loro, proprio come sulla pelliccia del leopardo, le macchie nerastre e ancora fradice d'acqua delle pietre nuove spiccano come lordura. Più che di macchia di leopardo, però, io parlerei dei suoi artigli e, perché no, anche di una questione di pellicce, ma non di pietra...	Besides the substitution of stones throughout entire urban areas, they were replaced even when there were small excavations being done for the maintenance of the underground systems. New stones were used to fill in and the originals vanished into nothing. Some works only needed a few stones and now they are thousands, others projects however were considerable like the repaving of an entire street. The substituted stones are easily identifiable by walking in the city half an hour after a spring rain. You will see the original stones shinning their colors, now almost dry; between them just like the fur of a leopard, the blackish spots of new stones still sodden with water scattered like litter. More than the spots of the leopard, however, I would speak of their claws, and why not, maybe a question of fur but not of stone.

In campo Santa Margherita (vedi sulla mappa) le macchie di leopardo si sono espanse come macchie di nafta sull'acqua: Attorno agli alberi, e giù verso i Carmini sono migliaia le pietre rubate.

In Campo Santa Margherita (see map) the spots of leopard are expansive like oil spots on water. Around the trees, and in the direction of the Carmini there are thousands of stolen stones.

In calle della Pietà (vedi sulla mappa) sono sparite tutte le vecchie pietre: un bel macchione, non c'è che dire...

In the Calle of the Pieta (see map) all of the old stones have disappeared, a big stain, there is nothing to say…

In queste calli che dalla Pescaria di Rialto portano verso l'omonima Ruga (vedi sulla mappa) la macchia diventa di zebra: i tre corsi centrali di pietre sono stati sostituiti; eppure le pietre originali sono ancora lì, belle e grandi...

On the streets from the Erbaria di Rialto going towards Ruga Rialto (see map) the spot became that of a zebra: the three central strips of stone have been substituted, nevertheless the original stones are still there, beautiful and grand…

In campo San Zulian (vedi sulla mappa), uno dei più centrali, vicino a piazza San Marco, ben si vede la toppa di pietre grigiastre fra quelle policrome originali

In Campo San Zulian (see map), one of the more central, near Piazza San Marco, you can see well the patch of grayish stone between the original polychromes.

Questa si trova in calle lunga S.Maria Formosa (vedi sulla mappa), ma sono ormai centinaia in città i rattoppi grandi e piccoli che insudiciano la reputazione dei "restauratori".

This is found in Calle Lunga Santa Maria Formosa (see map), but there are already hundreds throughout the city, both big and small patches that ruin the reputation of "restorers".
