Fondamenta dei Tolentini (vedi sulla mappa): questa foto è stata scattata il 27 febbraio 2001. Incuranti delle disastrose esperienze precedenti, per la seconda volta in tre anni si ripavimenta fondamenta dei Tolentini posando su sabbia. Naturalmente un suolo di sabbia non si può compattare con la pioggia, allora si ricorre a questa macchinetta impaccatrice per asfalto, del tutto inutile, anzi, decisamente ridicola.

Fondamenta dei Tolentini (see ombra.net maps): this picture was taken on 27th February, 2001. Ignoring previous disastrous experiences, those responsible are, for the second time in three years, repaving the fondamenta dei Tolentini by laying the stones on sand alone. Sand, by its very nature, cannot be compressed, yet it is thought fit to use a vibrating compactor on it. While useful on asphalt, or sand, clay and grit mixes, compactors are useless on pure sand. The use of these compactors costs time, energy and public money, and generate a great deal of noise, all for nothing.

Fondamenta dei Tolentini, 27th February, 2001. Sand, sand, sand. Again and again, the "masegni" are laid on just sand!

Fondamenta San Severo (vedi sulla mappa): un esempio di bei masegni posati male. I corsi sono stati numerati ma le pietre sono posate larghissime su un fondo di sola sabbia, destinato a percolare rapidamente con la pioggia e la marea. Per far sì che il danno si riveli più tardi, i masegni vengono cementati tra loro, in modo da formare una crosta rigida, che cederà di schianto quando le cavità sottostanti saranno ormai molto estese

Fondamenta San Severo (see ombra.net maps): an example of badly set "masegni". The stones have been numbered, but are set very far apart from each other and on a substratum consisting only of sand, which will be rapidly eroded by rain and tide. To conceal for as long as possible the likelihood of future damage, the stones have been sealed together with cement mortar. This will crust over, and eventually collapse into the cavities below caused by the sand having been washed away.

Venezia, in campo dei Tolentini e nella fondamenta adiacente (vedi sulla mappa) la posa è pessima. Si ricollocano masegni antichi che sono stati però "rifilati", cioè ridotti alla metà della misura originale. Un escamotage. Pressati dalla cittadinanza e da varie organizzazioni tra cui Italia Nostra, i "restauratori" recentemente si limitano a rubare mezza pietra soltanto... Anche qui si posa su sabbia e si cementano i masegni posati larghi.

In campo dei Tolentini, and in the fondamenta nearby, (see ombra.net maps): the setting is very poor. Old "masegni" have been relaid, but only after "trimming", which has reduced them to half of their original size. Following pressure from public opinion and some organizations like Italia Nostra, the "restorers" have recently limited themselves to rob only half of each stone... The stones here have also been laid very far apart from each other, again just on sand alone, and sealed together with cement.

Again in fondamenta dei Tolentini, as soon as the works were completed, the cement-stone crust, set on a sand substratum alone, had already moved. This caused the opening of this fracture along the Istria stone that divides the campo from the fondamenta.
