| Per quanto riguarda le Zattere, il trafugamento dei masegni è la minore delle disgrazie accadute: i problemi più gravi sono senza dubbio la scomparsa di molte centinaia di grandi blocchi di pietra d'Istria, la trasformazione delle rive in "banchina portuale" con la costruzione di un'immensa struttura in cemento armato sottostante tutto lo sviluppo della panoramica passeggiata e, non ultimo, la selva di lampioni che ora chiude la vista verso San Giorgio Maggiore. Quanto ai masegni, comunque, anche qui si sono ripetuti errori madornali come la posa su sabbia e l'uso di una pietra grigiastra che non resiste alla salsedine. Anche qui sono state asportate trachiti di grandi dimensioni e quelle che sono tornate dalla rifilatura, quando sono ritornate, erano ridotte a metà della misura originale. |
Concerning the Zattere, the stealing of the trachyte stones is a minor disaster. The more serious problems are without doubt the disappearance of many hundreds of large blocks of Istrian stones, the transformation of the waterfront into "a banchine portuale" with the construction of an immense structure of ferroconcrete lying below all the development of the panoramic walkway and the thick line of lanterns that now closes the view of San Giorgio Maggiore. In as much as the stones, as well here there are enormous repeated errors like the placement on sand, the use of a grayish stone that is not resistant to salt. Also huge stones were taken away, reduced by half their original size and then replaced. |

| Zattere alla Dogana: questo slargo ai piedi del ponte dell'Umiltà era uno dei più suggestivi, grazie al panorama ma anche grazie all'atmosfera che vi creavano le vecchie trachiti, forse un po' sconnesse ma "vissute". La nuova pavimentazione, pur fatta con pietre di qualità migliore che altrove, con il suo taglio rigidamente squadrato ha distrutto la suggestione storica del luogo. Forse nella scelta di pietre migliori ha giocato il fatto che tutta questa zona sarebbe stata data in concessione al Museo Guggenheim? |  | Zattere to Dogana: this stretch of walkway from the bridge of Humility was one of the most unforgettable thanks to the panorama but also thanks to the atmosphere created by the old stones, maybe a little weathered and worn but "lived." The new pavement, although made with stones of a better quality than elsewhere, have a stiff square cut which ruins the historic feeling of the location. Maybe with the choice of a better quality of stones there was a gamble that the zone would be given to the Guggenheim Museum? |
